SHAPE 2 : APRIL 2021

Shape is a series of virtual residencies for artists, creatives, and culture-makers.

The theme of Vinegar’s second Shape residency was “Art and Resilience.”

Four Monday evening meetings in April 2021, plus work behind the scenes in our studios.

Shape was a virtual artist residency series designed to nurture the often intangible aspects of creative careers, addressing topics that extend beyond the studio walls into artists’ lives, communities, and ethical frameworks.

Shape: Art and Resilience offers an open-ended exploration with a community of committed participants. Vinegar offers this residency in response to a palpable urgency in the creative community to sustain artists’ careers and to support the arts as part of community resilience (as it relates to the pandemic and other issues). Vinegar's staff and board members will participate as resident artists alongside everyone else. Together, we will consider creative approaches toward personal and collective resilience. The residency will conclude with an online exhibition and reception.

Throughout the month of April 2021, the residency will take place on Zoom and in each artist’s studio (wherever that may be), and will conclude with a virtual exhibition of projects and ideas at vinegarprojects.org. The Zoom sessions will offer insights from artists and community leaders (20 minute presentations) followed by group discussions, coordinated by Vinegar but led by all participants.

Shape is FREE* and open to any and all artists, creatives, and culture-makers from any location. The residency will conducted in English and American Sign Language.

Itinerary:

  • All sessions will be moderated by Voice Porter (he/him), Director of The Color Project Ensley

  • Each session began with an embodied grounding practice led by dance artist Fen Kennedy (they/them).
